King Arthur
Joe Gormley Arthur Scargill National Union of Miners original cartoon artwork. The NUM balloted had its miners who voted not to strike as a direct result of the article in the Daily Express by Joe Gormley, Scargill's much revered and trusted predecessor. In those days, the Express was selling 2.2m copies a day, many of them working class readers. In Garland's cartoon, Scargill's Crusader shield is, of course, the Express's Crusader emblem. The Gormley call for order was an amazing coup which did not go unnoticed by Margaret Thatcher and it temporarily turned the tide.
