Arrival of St. George

Only £1175.00

The 1931 by-election for the constituency of Westminster St. George's saw the Empire Free Trade Crusade party threatening the Conservatives at a time when satisfaction with Stanley Baldwin's leadership was at a low. When the original Conservative candidate stepped down, Duff Cooper agreed to contest the election in what was regarded as a referendum on Baldwin's leadership. He successfully won the seat. The cartoon was published with the 'Mr Diana' removed. Lord Beaverbrook the owner of the Evening Standard was a 'friend' of Lady Diana Cooper and thought its inclusion in the cartoon was in bad taste. This original cartoon was originally owned by Alfred Duff Cooper later Viscount Norwich.
