Tom Webster was a self-taught artist who became renowned for his sports cartoons. He worked for the Daily Mail from 1919 until 1940 and was the highest paid journalist in Fleet Street for over a decade. Webster's most famous creation was Tishy, the racehorse able to cross his forelegs whilst running. Tishy appeared in two animated films, one of which had a royal premiere at the Hippodrome. Other notable Webster characters were the Bloated Bookmaker and the Horizontal Heavyweight. Webster had a customised Daimler, fitted with an easel in the back, enabling him to start drawings as he returned to the office after a sporting event.
