William Sillince was born in Battersea, London and studied at Regent Street Polytechnic School of Art and Central School of Art, London. He began work in advertising before becoming a freelance cartoonist, contributing to Punch between 1936 - 1974, including whole page political cartoons as deputy to Leslie Illingworth. Sillince also drew regularly for The Bystander. Fougasse described Sillince as 'a humorist-stylist and, technically a most excellently equipped artist, with an enthusiasm for experiment.' He also worked under the pen name of 'Silenvs'.
