Geoff Hook started his career as a press artist and part-time cartoonist on the Hobart Mercury. In 1964, he moved to Melbourne and started at the Sun News Pictorial. Hook became the full-time cartoonist for The Sun (later to become the Herald Sun) soon after. In 1987 Geoff won the award for humorous illustration in the Australian Black and White Artists Club's Bulletin Awards. In 1998, Geoff was awarded the Australian Black and White Artists Club's Silver Stanley Award for lifetime achievement and in 2009 he was awarded a lifetime achievement award by the Melbourne Press Club. Geoff was further recognised for his service to the print media as "a political and social commentator, and as a cartoonist" when he was awarded a Medal of the Order of Australia in 2012.
