GUS, George William Smith (1915 - 1999)

George Smith went to Exeter University to study architecture. During the Second World War he served in the Royal Army Service Corps and after the war worked for Shell-Mex as a surveyor. He also drew cartoons for Punch and Lilliput magazines. Smith originally signed his cartoons "GWS", but this soon became "Gus", In 1953 his popular occasional cartoons for the Evening News led to a staff contract, where he provided a daily joke for some 20 years. He also drew cartoons for Sketch and Bystander, Men-Only, and the popular weeklies John Bull, Everybody's and even the Radio Times.
