Rick Brookes was a staff cartoonist for the Evening Standard from 1977, signing his cartoons ‘Brook’ so he would not be confused with The Times cartoonist, Peter Brookes. He worked alongside JAK for 17 years, deputising for him and remembering him as "one of my best friends." In 1994, Brook replaced Giles as the cartoonist at the Daily Express, moving to the Sun in 1996. Brookes's cartoons were especially popular in Metro with his cartoon strip 'THIS LIFE'. Only a few originals have survived from Brookes's time at the Daily Express, as he destroyed the vast majority of them after he left the paper.
