Born in Spain, Mario Armengol was forced to flee to France in 1937 during the Spanish Civil War because of his antipathy towards Franco. Armengol was forced into joining the French Foreign Legion after French authorities said that if he did not he would be returned to Spain. He arrived in Glasgow in 1940, having been evacuated with French forces from Narvik during the ill-fated Norway Campaign. During the Second World War, he produced political cartoons for many newspapers as well as for the Ministry of Information and France, a Free French publication. After the war he drew posters for British Rail and spent 20 years as a designer at ICI (1951-1971).
