Furnival was a sports cartoonist for the Lancashire Evening Post during the 1930s. When war broke out in September 1939, he turned his hand to drawing political cartoons for the paper. This he continued to do until 1946. Some of his cartoons appeared in the Daily Express under the pseudonym ‘Monk’.
